Tipsy Apple Tart

Ingredients

  • 3-4 Apples thin sliced
  • 3 tbsp Whisky *optional but delicious
  • 2 tbsp vanilla
  • 1-2 tbsp orange juice *if not using whisky use a little extra in place of
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar packed
  • 1 1/2 tbsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 4-6 tbsp butter softened
  • 1 pastry crust I used a square sheet, trimmed it and pieced it together to fit my circular pan.

Instructions

  • Preheat oven 400f/200c.
  • Slice apples into a bowl and toss with whisky, vanilla, and orange juice to soak up flavor and keep from browning.

  • Mix brown sugar with cinnamon and nutmeg.
  • Roll out and press crust into your chosen flat pan shape.
  • Spread butter onto crust, leaving about an inch from the edge.
  • Sprinkle on the sugar & spice mixture, saving about 1-2 tbls for later.

  • Start to lay out apple slices onto the prepared crust. It doesn't have to be perfect looking because it will be perfect tasting!
  • Sprinkle the remaining sugar & spice on top of the apples, and fold over the little edge in towards the apples. see picture
  • Bake in oven for 20 minutes.
  • Best served warm, topped with double cream or ice cream.

Notes

I have made this recipe off-the-cuff for years with various tweeks. I have had tasty success with just combining the butter, sugar, whisky, vanilla, orange juice and spices into a sauce pan and melting together for just a minute or two, then pouring over the apples already fanned out on to the crust. Equally delicious results!
